Male, Black and Sexual Minorities Are Increasingly at Risk of Attempting Suicide According to Research Presented at the Society of Behavioral Medicine
Research presented at the Society of Behavioral Medicine reveals that male, Black, and sexual minority adolescents are increasingly at risk of attempting suicide—often without prior suicidal thoughts or plans. Using two decades of data from the CDC’s National Youth Risk Behavior Survey (1999–2019), the study highlights a troubling trend: these groups are more likely than their peers to attempt suicide impulsively. The findings call for expanded suicide prevention strategies that go beyond traditional risk indicators and prioritize proactive outreach to historically marginalized youth populations.
